It’s possible you’ve heard the name “Shinola” from A.) your grandfather (perhaps he used the brand’s original but now defunct product, a shoe polish.) B.) that one verse on Madvillain’s “Figaro” C.) Steve Martin as “The Jerk,” and/or D.) Detroit-centric folks their fingers on the pulse and others with a keen eye for stylish, American-made goods.
OK, ok, so in short, Shinola is a new-ish Detroit-based line & manufacturer of bicycles, timepieces, leather goods & journals. The company is gaining explosive momentum on the web with tons of nods from lifestyle websites to Forbes (like here, here & here!) and recently introduced e-commerce to their site, Shinola.com.They set up shop in Detroit’s Argonaut Building (AKA the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design) on Milwaukee Street in 2012 and have been cranking out American-made goods since. Don’t believe me? You can watch them build timepieces live here!
Whether you fancy a sophisticated pastel pink cruiser-type bike, a slick made-in-Detroit watch, classic, cool leather goods from iPhone cases to two-tone totes and chic linen-covered journals, Shinola has you covered, while creating dozens of jobs here in Detroit, to boot.
Hate shopping online? Don’t fret. Shinola is slated to open a storefront in Midtown, Detroit later this month.
